blog roll and its significance?

I see a Blogroll column in almost every blog site these days. And the links in this blog roll have websites that have a do follow link. Is a blogroll concept based on affiliate marketing? I want to know what is a blog roll and its significance.

I blogroll is supposed to be a link of blogs the blogger reads and recommends not affiliate links.

If you add link in blogroll then Google index your link quickly and you also get traffic also from blogroll
